Charter Cable accidentally permanently deletes email accounts

Charter Communications admits it accidentally erased thousands of its customers' e-mail accounts by mistake.

A Charter spokesperson said an accident during routine maintenance deleted 14,000 accounts.

I now have a single monitor on my desk. Need to do a bit of re-organizing, to make better use of the now free space; yay for monitor cables and big CAD station monitors with dual inputs!

Apparently I am behind on my offerings to the Computer Gods - after the multiple failures over Thanksgiving, it now appears that our DNS server (which had not migrated yet) is now non functional.

*sigh*

I guess I ought to get organized and do a fairly decent ritual to deal with that this weekend, since I am seemingly remiss in my duties there. 

I despise whatever version of unix it is that is running on my workstation here at work. There are a zillion things every day that I expect it to do that it refuses to cooperate on.

For example: auto-complete by hitting tab? no dice. In fact, there is no key on my keyboard that makes this function.

And I have a Windows key on my keyboard. WTF?

I'm not sure I agree with their methodolgy...which involved jumpering the hard drive. But the results (and the statements from the companies after the fact) were instructive.

I'm one of those people who, for all that I'm geeky vaguely hacker-like, I just want my computer to work. It doesn't have to be fancy, it doesn't have to run the newest graphics cards or the latest games. Basic tasks need to work, all the time, as expected, without user intervention ( Read more... )

Yesterday, I got the new laptop running with linux.

Tonight, with much assistance, I got my wifi card working. And I got Gaim/pidgin working on my own. and I haven't transferred any of my data over yet, and there's a short list of problems to work out, but it's working.

I've been thinking for a while that while a laptop is nice, a *smaller* laptop would be even nicer. It'd be easier to carry, which would make writing here and there at lunch or wherever more convenient.

some days, having multiple email accounts feeding one inbox is a pain...

Particularly when you realize, after sending quite a few messages, that you don't have posting access to *that* list from *that* account.

*grumbles*

Yesterday, I came home to 364 emails in my personal inbox.

I went to bed last night at 9 pm with about 40 emails in my inbox. I came in this morning, and at 8:15 am I had 211 emails.

Contrast this with the 22 emails at work from not checking email in 36 hours...

*sigh*
